The idea for HostAndGuest didn’t come from a corporate boardroom; it came from a simple realization during a get-together with friends.

We all wanted to travel and catch up more often, but the reality of modern holidays always got in the way. Booking generic hotels or holiday rentals has become incredibly expensive if the goal is simply to spend time together and hang out at good places. On the flip side, traditional hosting felt like hard work—hosts worry about burning out in the kitchen, and guests worry about overstaying their welcome or imposing. Brilliant trip ideas just stayed trapped in the group chat.

We realized there had to be a better way to unlock the homes we already own and the local areas we already love.

We decided to treat our homes like private holiday villas and split the timeline exactly 50/50. By introducing a few simple ground rules—like a strict 5-day / 4-night limit, zero cooking for guests, and focusing on a comfortable bed rather than luxury real estate comparisons—the social awkwardness completely vanished. It wasn't a favour anymore; it was a mutual pact.

HostAndGuest is simply the free framework born from that first successful trip. It is a structured blueprint designed to help friends stop overthinking, get out of the group chat, and start experiencing new places like a local.

About the author: I have used home exchange, house sitting and holiday rental platforms and I suppose this idea is a hybrid borne out of those experiences. I must admit I was thinking of couples. Maybe it can be adapted to suit different circumstances, and it may not work for everyone, but the basic principle is still the same. I hope you find it useful.
